English version
Driverless cars have remained hot for several years, and many head players have taken the lead in driving test. It seems that as long as we pass the test barrier, we will soon usher in the era of driverless driving.
But the ideal is very full, the reality is too skeletal. According to foreign media reports, in March this year, U.S. online dating giant Uber killed a pedestrian during an unmanned driving test in Tempe, Arizona, the first time in history that an unmanned vehicle hit a pedestrian on an open road. Coincidentally, in May, a vehicle tested on public roads by Waymo, Google's driverless division, was caught in a serious traffic accident and its body was badly damaged. As a result of the accident, the safety problem of driverless vehicles was once pushed to the top of the storm, and related tests were once forced to stop, which made many later generations afraid and began to calm down. So far, when driverless cars can safely go on the road is still uncertain. However, many players in this area have not yet been able to really solve the problems caused by driverless cars, but the other side has also focused on flying cars, hoping to seize this new market first.
It is reported that Porsche and Piersch family holding companies believe that flying cars will become a conventional means of transportation by 2025, which will be powered by electricity and have the ability to drive unmanned vehicles. By 2035, the market for flying cars could reach $32 billion. So it seems that the blue sea of flying cars, which has yet to be developed, has enough attraction to attract many automotive industry leaders. It is understood that Uber, who caused the first fatal pedestrian accident in history, had plans to build flying cars before. Last April, at the Uber Elevate Summit in Dallas, USA, Uber announced its eVTOL air taxi plan to start testing operations in 2020 and enter the market in 2023.

In August, Uber confirmed its participation in Japan's Flying Vehicle Project. In addition, the test flight candidate of UerAIR, a practical air taxi, will be selected from five countries, namely Japan, India, Australia, Brazil and France, within six months. It seems that Uber has vowed to make a big difference in flying cars. However, the previous driverless accidents caused by Uber have branded Uber's R&D technology as "unreliable" by consumers, while Uber has to build more challenging flying cars than driverless ones, and its safety may not be enough to win the trust of consumers.
In addition, in November last year, Geely Group, a domestic car company, reached a final agreement with Terrafugia Inc. to acquire all the business and assets of Terrafugia, the largest flying car company in the United States. On September 9 this year, Liao Yunwu, director of Terrafugia Flying Vehicle, Geely Group, told reporters that according to the current production cycle, Terrafugia Flying Vehicle is tentatively scheduled to start booking in October. It is planned to start mass production next year. Terrafugia Flying Vehicle's first generation products are initially planned to be launched in the United States. In fact, before Geely's acquisition, Terrafugia flew its first flying car, Transition, in 2013 and planned to go into production in 2016. However, due to various reasons, such as laws, regulations, policies and imperfect infrastructure, Terrafugia did not produce energy. This time, even after Geely's capital support, if market environment problems such as infrastructure and laws and regulations remain unresolved, the production of Terrafugia flying cars is expected to drift again.

Moreover, compared with Uber and Geely, Toyota's flying car program is more like playing soy sauce. As early as 2014, Toyota's application for a patent for flying cars was exposed, but later Toyota focused on the development of driverless technology, flying cars can only be developed by engineers in their spare time. Toyota hopes to develop a flying car that will make its debut at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and light the torch at the Olympic Stadium. It also plans to launch a mass-produced version of the flying car in 2025. I wonder if the seemingly "unprofessional" Toyota Flying Vehicle can match its ideal of such fullness. Compared with the amateur development of Toyota Flying Vehicle, it takes other players longer to specialize in the development of Flying Vehicle.
Nevertheless, the high threshold of flying cars and people's disdain still can not prevent these players from pursuing flying cars enthusiastically. Players'courage is commendable. But it's not so easy to guess about flying cars at the moment.
