Gifted Airbus helps Japan's R & D flying car Geely to launch next year.

According to foreign media reports, people familiar with the matter said that Japan is vigorously developing flying cars, and will gather Youbu, Airbus and other companies into a government-led group, with a view to introducing air vehicles into Japan in the next decade. The group will initially consist of about 20 companies, including Boeing, NEC, Toyota-backed startup Cartivator, ANA Holdings, Japan Airlines and Yamato Holdings.

The company representatives will assemble for the first monthly meeting in August 29th, people familiar with the matter said. In addition, Japan's Ministry of economy, commerce and industry and the Ministry of transport plan to draft a roadmap this year. The spokesman confirmed the news but declined to comment further. Airbus, Boeing, All Nippon Airlines, Nippon Airlines, Nippon Electric, Daiwa Holdings and Cartivator declined to comment, and Japan's Commerce and Transport Department declined to comment.

Cars flying over crowded roads are much closer to reality than many people think. Startups around the world are working on these small aircraft, and until recently, flying cars have remained in the realm of science fiction. Because Japanese companies have lagged behind their global counterparts in electric vehicles and autonomous driving vehicles, the Japanese government is particularly urgent in the technology of flying cars, and has begun to promote legislation and infrastructure construction to help Japanese enterprises take the lead in this regard.

Many companies have taken the lead in this competition. Youbo will invest 20 million ($23 million) over the next five years to develop flying car services at a new Paris plant and plan to start commercial operations of its air taxi business by 2023. Kitty Hawk, a startup founded and supported by Google's Larry Page in Mountain View, California, unveiled a flying single recreational car in June. Other multinationals planning to adopt this new mode of transportation include Volkswagen's Audi brand, Daimler and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. Japanese automakers have yet to announce plans to develop a flying car.

Minister Hiroshige, Japan's economy minister, told reporters this month that flying cars can ease urban traffic congestion, help transport remote islands or mountains in the event of disasters, and can also be used in tourism. Flight technology, like aviation technology, needs to be approved by a number of regulators, a process that could take years. Only when regulators set safety standards can the technology be implemented, otherwise passengers will not accept flying cars. Japan wants to take the lead in enacting regulations for this emerging industry because Japanese policymakers believe that current aviation regulations are mainly made in Europe and the United States.

Geely flying cars listed

On August 1, China Geely Holdings Group officially announced that its Terrafugia Taili Flying Automobile Company will open its reservation in October this year. The first batch of products are in mass production and will be launched in 2019. The first batch of users will be mainly targeted at the U.S. market.

The flying car, called Transition, has a pair of folding wings and weighs about 1,300 pounds (590 kilograms), and can run on the road or fly to the sky. Two passengers are allowed to fly at a maximum altitude of 3000 meters and a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour. The flight can last 640 kilometers in the air. 19 litres of fuel per hour are needed. The fuel consumption of 100 kilometers is about 11.87 litres, which is equivalent to only 2.0T vehicles. Transition's wings can be fully extended in 40 seconds, and it takes only 30 meters of runway to fly into the sky; the wings fold up and the body matches the SUV, making it easy to park in a home garage.

The upcoming mass-production Transition upgrades power, acceleration, interior, safety and air support, including hybrid engines (lithium iron phosphate batteries), flight acceleration, a more comfortable ride experience, and greater luggage space. Improved seatbelt/airbag/three-view camera imaging and the introduction of Dynon's flight information system and BRS's parachute system.
