Japan is working hard to develop flying cars and incorporate companies including Internet contract giants Uber and Airbus into government-led agencies to bring flying cars to Japan in the next 10 years, Bloomberg quoted people familiar with the matter as saying.

It was originally formed by 20 companies, including Boein, Toyota, ANA, JAL and Yamato. The representatives of these companies will hold their first monthly meeting in August 29th, people familiar with the matter said. They said Japan's Ministry of economy and industry and transport ministry plan to draft a roadmap this year.

A Uber spokesman confirmed that the company was involved in Japan's flying car program but declined to comment further. Representatives from Airbus, Boeing, All Nippon Airlines, JAL, NEC, Daiwa and Cartivator, as well as officials from the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Transport, declined to comment.

Flying cars are much closer to reality than many people think. Startups around the world are developing small airplanes, and until recently, this was only the realm of science fiction. As Japanese companies have lagged behind their global counterparts in electric and driverless vehicles, the Japanese government has shown a sense of urgency in research and development of aircraft technology and has begun to promote legislation and infrastructure to help gain leadership.

Many companies have already taken the lead in this competition. Uber will invest 20 million ($23 million) over the next five years to build a laboratory in Paris to develop flying car services. The goal of Uber is to start its business of aviation tax business before 2023.

Kitty Hawk, a startup founded and supported by Google co-founder Larry Page and based in Mountain View, California, unveiled a prototype plane, the single-player leisure car, in June. Other multinationals planning to adopt the new vehicles include Volkswagen AG, Daimler AG and Geely, the Chinese carmaker.

Japanese automakers have yet to announce plans to develop flying cars. But Hiroshige Seko, Japan's economy minister, said this month that flying cars could ease urban traffic congestion, help remote islands or mountains in the event of disasters, and be used in tourism.

The technology, like aviation, requires approval from several regulators, which may take years. Without these standards, passengers would not accept this kind of aircraft. Japan wants to take the lead in setting rules for this nascent industry because policymakers believe most of the current air regulations are made in Europe and the United States.

According to reports, the group is composed of young technicians from Japan's automotive and aviation industries, the goal is to develop a "flying car" in the 2020 Olympic Games show flight. The first unmanned test flight will be conducted at an abandoned school in Toyota, Aichi County on December 12 to verify its safety and prepare for the next manned flight.

The Flying Vehicle, which resembles a large UAV, has three wheels, 3.7 meters wide and 1.5 meters high, with front and rear seats. The highest flying altitude is 10 meters, with a vertical take-off and landing, and the target speed is 100 kilometers per hour. It is expected to be debuted at the exhibition in Yokohama in late May.

The group provides financial and technical support from TOYOTA and NEC. Flying Vehicle is scheduled to go on sale in 2025, but its safety and legal protection are still facing many problems to be solved.

As a new generation of transportation vehicles, the research and development of "flying cars" has attracted worldwide attention. Last spring, a U.S. company announced a "flying taxi program," and Chinese companies have successfully tested the flight of a manned "UAV".(文编译飞行汽车feiauto)www.feiauto.com
