Will the flying car take off soon? Look at the Japanese idea!

Electric UAVs booked on smartphones pick up people from office roofs, shortening travel time by several hours and reducing the need for parking and smoke removal.

This vision of the future is pushing the Japanese government's "flying car" project. Major airlines, All Nippon Airlines, electronics company NEC, and a dozen other companies and academics hope to develop a roadmap by the end of this year.

"This is a whole new area, and Japan is likely to lag behind," said Fumiaki Ebihara, the government official in charge of the project.

No one believes that a flying car will soon be realized. Many obstacles still exist, such as battery life, regulatory requirements, and safety problems. But dozens of similar projects have sprung up all over the world. So far, prototypes are not like traditional cars, but more like large enough to accommodate human UAVs.

Flying vehicles are defined as electric or hybrid electric aircraft with unmanned capabilities that can land and take off vertically. They are usually called EVtol, representing the electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft. Ebihara and other supporters say the concept of flying cars is expected to be better than helicopters, which are expensive to maintain, noisy to fly and require trained pilots.

"You might think of'back to the future','up'or'Doraemon'," Ebihara says, referring to aircraft in Hollywood movies and robots in Japanese comics. "So far, it's only a dream, but with the innovation of motors and batteries, it should come true."

Google, UAV Ehang and Chinese carmaker Geely, as well as Volkswagen, have invested in flying car technology. Nissan Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Corp. said they had nothing to say about flying cars, but Toyota Motor Corp. recently invested $500 million to develop self-driving technology in partnership with Unibus. Toyota also invested 42.5 million yen ($375,000) in Cartivator, a Japanese start-up that is developing flying cars. The hope is to fly and light the torch at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but it is unclear whether it will achieve that goal.
