Early on Jan. 24, Beijing Time, Boeing said Wednesday that its prototype flying car flew briefly during its first test flight. It has also become an important step for the world's largest aircraft manufacturer to reform urban transportation and package distribution services.

Boeing is competing with its old rival Airbus and a number of other companies in the hope of launching aircraft capable of taking off and landing vertically. The project has benefited from the leap in automation technology and people's anxiety about road congestion. The Boeing aircraft is about 9 meters long, equivalent to a combination of helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles and fixed-wing aircraft. It flew several feet off the ground at Manassas Airport, Virginia, on Tuesday and landed slowly after a few minutes in the air. Boeing's project faces many security problems and regulatory hurdles.

Boeing is also working with startup Spark Cognition and the Federal Aviation Administration to develop a traffic management system for 3D highways, as well as a regulatory framework that allows a large number of driverless vehicles to travel safely around buildings. Boeing bought Aurora Flight Sciences last year to speed up the development of unmanned aerial vehicles. The company is also working with Uber's UberAIR service and plans to provide "flying" services via smartphones around 2023.
